Book Review: Mr Moon Wakes Up by Jemima Sharpe

Mr MoonThis week I have a perfect bedtime read for your little ones.  Jemima Sharpe’s Mr Moon Wakes Up has a mythical, dreamlike quality that is coupled with lovely, soothing illustrations and will help to lull many a toddler into dreamland.

Our protagonist is a little frustrated by the fact that his pet (not 100% sure if it’s a dog, cat or rabbit but I believe that to be intentional and adds to the charm) is continually sleepy and a little boring until one night when he reveals his nocturnal magic and takes the child on a moonlit adventure in a beautiful garden, accessed via some pretty impressive magic wallpaper.MrMoon3

The colour hue of predominantly green shades is so relaxing and the traditional line drawings are stunning.  The illustrations are also really detailed and Caterpillar really enjoyed looking closely and spotting all the different characters and activities going on.

I’ll admit I’m not usually a fan of this kind of slightly abstract prose but the illustrations and whimsical feel of this picture book intrigued me and captivated my son.

  1. I hadn’t heard of this book but it sounds lovely. I’m not sure my 7 year old would enjoy it these days though, I’ll keep it in mind for any younger readers though, thanks for the recommendation. 🙂
